Jaquess, Smith Win Malibu Open Titles

U.S. water ski athletes Regina Jaquess (Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.) and Nate Smith (McCordsville, Ind.) won the women’s and men’s professional slalom titles on Saturday at the 2018 Malibu Open Festival at Trophy Lakes in Johns Island, S.C. Jaquess won the women’s slalom title over France’s Manon Costard in the head-to-head finals, scoring 1 buoy at 41 feet off to Costard’s 3-1/2 buoys at 39-1/2 feet off. Smith won the men’s slalom title over Great Britain’s Will Asher in the head-to-head finals, scoring 2-1/2 buoys at 41 feet off to Asher’s 1-1/2 buoys at 41 feet off.

 

Australia’s Jacinta Carroll won the women’s jumping title with a distance of 183 feet, and Canada’s Ryan Dodd won the men’s jumping title with a distance of 230 feet (70.2 meters), just one-tenth-of-a-meter ahead of U.S. athlete Freddy Krueger (Winter Garden, Fla.), who jumped 230 feet (70.1 meters).

 

 

Kristen Baldwin (Winter Garden, Fla.) won the Under 17 girls’ slalom (2 buoys at 38 feet off) and jumping (125 feet) titles. Griffin Stange (Sherman, Texas) won the Under 17 boys’ slalom title, scoring 5 buoys at 38 feet off. Canada’s Jaimee Bull won the Under 21 women’s slalom title, scoring 2 buoys at 39-1/2 feet off. The Dominican Republic’s Robert Pigozzi won the Under 21 men’s slalom title, scoring 2 buoys at 41 feet off. Will Roberts (Dow, Ill.) won Under 17 boys’ jumping with a distance of 172 feet. Belarus’ Aliaksandra Danisheuskaya won Under 21 women’s jumping with a distance of 156 feet.

The 2018 Malibu Open Festival will be held Friday and Saturday at Trophy Lakes in Johns Island, S.C. It will mark the second consecutive year that the Malibu Open Festival will be held at Trophy Lakes. The competition will include professional men’s and women’s slalom, tricks and jumping, as well as junior – Under 17 and Under 21 – men’s and women’s slalom and jumping.
